Mitchell leads Lady Cougars as they climb back in PBC race

AMERICUS, Ga. -- When the Columbus State Lady Cougars went through their recent mini-slump -- losing 3 of 4 -- they fell three games behind Clayton State in the Peach Belt Conference's Western Division.

But that deficit has been cut to one game after CSU won its second straight Saturday -- 72-56 over Georgia Southwestern -- while Clayton State was losing its second straight, this one at Augusta.

CSU hosts Clayton State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with first place in the division on the line.

"That was a much-needed road win," CSU coach Jonathan Norton said after the game.

CSU fell behind GSW 15-11 after one quarter. But then the Lady Cougars, which had been struggling in the second quarter all season, outscored the Hurricanes 26-9 for a 37-24 lead at halftime.

Michelle Mitchell scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the second quarter.

Mitchell added eight rebounds.

Ashley Asouzu tied her season-high with 14 points. She aldo had six rebounds.

Brea Walker hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

GSW went on an 11-4 run to end the first quarter for the 15-11 lead.

Asouzu scored CSU's first six points in the second quarter to tie the game at 17-17.

Mitchell scored 15 of CSU's next 20 points.

Asouzu and Ashley Johnson hit baskets to open the third quarter for a 17-point lead, 41-24.

GSW (9-10, 3-9) never got closer than 13 the rest of the game.
