Columbus State softball drops two on opening day
The Columbus State softball team opened its 2016 season with a pair of losses on Saturday in the Southern Softball Showdown at South Commons.
CSU lost 13-5 to No. 18 Alabama-Huntsville in the opener. Hanna Manley took the loss as she allowed six runs in 2 2-3 innings.
Katie White, Calli Star, Keeli Waugh and Lee Anne Rees drove in runs for the Lady Cougars.
CSU lost 1-0 to Valdosta State in the second game.
Darby Demarest took the loss. She gave up one unearned run on hit and five walks in four innings.
CSU managed just three hits. Those were by Kia Smith, Kailey Boone and Rachel Rhodes.
The showdown pits teams from the Peach Belt against etams from the Gulf South.
The Lady Cougars play Delta State at 11:30 a.m. today, then face North Alabama at 2 p.m. Both games will be in the stadium at South Commons.
