CSU baseball team falls to Erskine 7-4 in opener
DUE WEST, S.C. -- Erskine College rallied to tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the third Friday and went on to a 7-4 win over Columbus State at Grier Field.
CSU (0-1) scored first when Hunter Bowling doubled home Ryan Ihle in the top of the second inning.
The Cougars added to the lead in the third inning. Juan Montana drove in Jackson Oliver to make it 2-0. Blake Edwards walked and Ihle brought Montana and Edwards home with a double to left-center.
After Erskine (5-0) rallied in the third to tie the game, they broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh with RBI singles from Chaz Davey and Destin Nichols.
Ihle went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Cougars. Christian Miller went 2-for-5 for CSU.
CSU started Caleb Kutsche gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. Reliever Robert Hayes (0-1) took the loss. He gave up three runs on three hits over 1 2-3 innings. Joe Johnson (1-0) got the win in relief for Erskine. Johnson struck out four, allow no runs or hits over the final 2 1-3 innings.
CSU and Erskine will play a doubleheader today beginning at noon.
