DUE WEST, S.C. -- Columbus State pounded out 25 hits and racked up 25 runs Saturday to sweep a doubleheader 9-8 and 15-2 and take the three-game series from Erskine College.
In Game 1, CSU fell behind early but Blake Edwards put the Cougars on top with a 2-run double in the top of the second. Lake Hart doubled in Edwards and CSU led 3-1.
Erskine scored four runs to retake the lead 5-3 in the bottom of the second.
CSU's Christian Miller hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4, but the Cougars gave up two runs to Erskine in the bottom of the fifth to fall behind 7-4.
The Cougars chipped away at the lead in the sixth when Edwards scored on a fielder's choice to make 7-5.
Hart tied the game in the top of the seventh when singled to right, scoring Ryan Ihle and Grant Berry. Jackson Oliver then doubled home Edwards and Hart to give CSU the lead at 9-7.
Erskine got one back in the in the bottom of the seventh, but reliever Justin Evans (1-0) struck out Tristen Mooney to end the game. Evans gave up two hits and one run over 2 1-3 innings for the win. Landon Dickerson (0-1) gave up three runs on three hits in the top of the seventh and took the loss.
Edwards went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Hart went 2-for-2 and drove three runs.
In Game 2, the Cougars struck for a six-run fourth inning and the rout was on. Ihle went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs. Edwards was also 3-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs. Matt Nettles went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Fichter was 1-for-4 but was able to drive three runs.
Brandon Koehler (1-0) spread six hits over seven innings and gave up two runs. He struck out three and threw just 73 pitches in the complete-game victory.
Columbus State (2-1) opens the home season against Albany State Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the renovated Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.
