Bellarmine got seven hits and scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning Friday and held on to defeat Columbus State 7-5 in the first day of the Cougar Classic at Cougar Field.
The Lady Cougars committed two errors during the inning. The biggest blow for Bellarmine was a three-run homer by Ally Foster.
Columbus State rallied for five runs on five hits in the top of the third inning to close it to 6-5. But the Cougars had only one other hit in the game.
Bellarmine added another run in the bottom of the fifth on Katie Stamper's home run to make the final 7-5.
CSU's McKenzie Fagioli went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. She was the only Lady Cougar with two hits.
Peyton Sorrells (2-1) gave up six runs on eight hits over two innings and took the loss for CSU. Foster (5-1) struck out seven and gave up just one hit over 4 1-3 innings to pick up the win.
The Cougar Classic continues today at the South Commons. Columbus State (3-4) plays Miles at 2 p.m. and Bellarmine at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Lady Cougars play Lincoln Memorial at 11:30 a.m. and Miles at 2 p.m.
