Columbus State’s Quincy Smith tops national mark
Columbus State’s Quincy Smith set a school record and won the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.68 seconds on Saturday at the Charger Invitational.
Smith, a former Smiths Station standout, also qualified for nationals with that time. That was the fastest time in NCAA Division II this season.
That led CSU to a third-place finish with 113 points. Alabama-Huntsville won with 180, while Lee was second with 116.
CSU had two others individuals win events. Caleb Williams won the 100 in 11.08. James Young won the discus at 37.01 meters.
Meanwhile, the CSU women also finished third with 75 points behind Montevallo (152) and UA-Huntsville (112).
Shanila Chapman (Smiths Station) won three events. Individually, she won the long jump (5.05 meters) and the triple jump (10.54).
Chapman also teamed up with Rachel Dixon, Kayla Waters and Tierra Wright to win the 4x100 relay team in 49.38 seconds.
The CSU teams will return on March 18 in Atlanta in the Emory Invitational.
