CSU sweeps Armstrong State 12-2 and 13-9 on Sunday

Columbus State moved two steps closer to winning the Peach Belt Conference championship with a 12-2 and 13-9 sweep of Armstrong State on Sunday at Burger King Stadium.

The Cougars, who swept the three-game series from Armstrong State, are 21-6 in the conference — 36-10 overall.

CSU is a half-game ahead of Lander, which has finished its PBC schedule at 22-8.

CSU hosts UNC Pembroke next weekend for a three-game series. One win will give the Cougars a share of the title. With two wins, the Cougars will win the title outright.

CSU’s last conference championship came in 2008.

In the opener Sunday, the Cougars handed JT Phillips (Columbus High) the loss. He pitched just 1 1/3 innings and gave up four runs.

Albert Harless (5-2) got the win, allowing two runs in six innings.

Mike McClellan and Christian Miller both homered. Jackson Oliver drove in four runs.

McClellan and Oliver homered in Game 2. Blake Edwards had four hits and three RBIs.

The Cougars, who have won 14 straight, play a game at Point on Wednesday, It is a makeup game for one that was rained out earlier this month.

 

Georgia Tech 7, Clemson 3

Georgia Tech scored four runs in the first inning and went on to a 7-3 win over Clemson on Sunday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.

Center fielder Ryan Peurifoy went 3-for-4 and a pair of RBIs for the Jackets.

Burton Dunlaney (2-3) picked up the win in relief. He gave up just one run in 3 2/3 innings.

Matthew Gorst got his 10th save as he finished the ninth inning.

The win gives Georgia Tech (27-13, 10-10 ACC) the series win 2-1. Clemson is 26-14 and 9-12.

The Jackets play at Georgia on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

 

Texas A&M 2, Alabama 1

Pinch-hitter Jonathan Moroney singled in a run in the bottom of the ninth innings to lift Texas A&M over Alabama 2-1 on Sunday at Blue Bell Stadium in College Station, Texas.

The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the third. Alabama tied it in the sixth on Cody Henry’s RBI single, which scored Georgie Salem.

Alabama starter Nick Eicholtz went seven innings and allowed the one run on six hits.

The win gave Texas A&M (32-8, 12-6 SEC) the 2-1 series win. Alabama is 24-17 and 9-9.

The Tide plays at Samford at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Ole Miss 6, Auburn 5

Ole Miss scored two runs in the eighth inning and four in the ninth to rally past Auburn 6-5 on Sunday in Oxford, Miss.

Casey Mize shut out the Rebels for seven innings. He pitched to one batter in the eighth. That batter reached on an error.

Auburn scored four in the second inning and added another in the seventh for a 5-0 lead.

Anfernee Grier (Russell County) doubled in the seventh and scored.

The win gives Ole Miss (31-10, 10-8 SEC) the series sweep. Auburn is 18-22 and 5-13.

Auburn hosts South Alabama at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
