Columbus State golf team ready for NCAA regional
The Columbus State men’s golf team begins play in the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional on Monday.
The 19th-ranked Cougars head into the regional coming off a championship in the Peach Belt Conference tournament two weeks ago.
CSU led the PBC tournament, which was played at the Slammer & Squire Course at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla., wire to wire.
It was the Cougars’ sixth PBC title, but the first since 2007.
The South/Southeast Super Regional will feature 20 teams and eight individuals. It is being played at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The three-day tournament continues through Wednesday.
The top five teams — and two individuals not on a qualiying team — from each regional will advance to the NCAA championships, which will be played May 17-21 at Green Valley Ranch in Denver.
"It is exciting for us to be competing in the NCAAs,’’ CSU coach Mark Immelman said. ‘’We position ourselves as a postseason team and it's good to be here.
"Now it's just a question of channeling our energy, keeping our focus, executing the plan and enjoying the challenges."
CSU is playing with Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern in the first round. One player from each team makes up each threesome. They will tee off starting at 8:20 a.m.
The CSU players are Robert Mize, Duncan van der Vyver, Gideon van der Vyver, Yannick Gumowski and TaeHyung Kim.
The Cougars are one of six PBC teams in the Southeast regional. The others are Flagler, USC Aiken, Georgia Southqwestern, Young Harris and Lander.
