CSU men third after first of NCAA regional

The Columbus State men’s golf team continued its stellar play with a 3-over-par 291 on Monday in the first round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional.

The 25th-ranked Cougars, who won the Peach Belt Conference championships last month, are tied for third with Limestone.

West Florida is in first place with an 8-under 280. Lynn is second at 282.

The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Denver later this month.

Scoring was good in the first round at the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Golf and tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Ten teams shot better than 300.

Barry and Georgia Southwestern are tied for fifth at 282.

Gideon van der Vyver and TaeHyung Kim both shot 1-under 71s to lead the Cougars.

They are tied for 11th.

Duncan van der Vyver is tied fro 29th after a 74, and Yannick Gumowski is tied for 38th at 75.

Robert Mize shot an 80, so his score didn’t count toward CSU’s team score.

West Florida’s Chandler Blanchet and Lynn’s Manuel Torres share the lead at 65.

The second round is scheduled for today. CSU is scheduled to go in the last group with the first player teeing off at 12:50 p.m.
