Columbus State tennis falls to BYU-Hawaii
The Columbus State women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to top-ranked BYU-Hawaii in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen on Wednesday.
CSU ends its season at 20-7. It is the Lady Cougars’ fifth straight 20-win season.
“My heart goes out to the girls,” CSU coach Evan Isaacs said. “We played really well today against the top team in the country, and the team has no reason to hang their heads. They battled this whole year, and I’m proud of the effort I saw on the court.”
CSU took two of the three doubles. Olivera Tadijin and Rachael Williams beat Kanela Adamson and Jade Griffin at No. 3 doubles 8-5.
BYU-Hawaii won at No. 1 doubles as Summer Wen and Dallas Zhang beat Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech 8-2.
CSU’s No. 2 doubles team of Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale won 9-8 in a tiebreaker over Karen Liu and Shu-Ying Hsieh.
BYU-Hawaii, which improved to 23-0, won easily at singles. Zhang beat Leon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Wen beat Tadijin 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Hsieh beat Utech 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and Griffin closed out the match beating Williams 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6 singles.
