ACC tournament live updates and scores

Boston College (13) 66, Pittsburgh (12) 46

Fifth-seeded Wake Forest draws 13th-seeded Boston College in Wednesday’s 2:30 p.m. game after the Eagles easily handled Pittsburgh on Tuesday to tie their largest-ever ACC win — especially with Panthers guards Femi Odukale and Jamarius Burton in foul trouble for most of the game.

That left Boston College spending much of the second half trying to top an 84-64 win over Georgia Tech in the 8-9 game in 2013 when Olivier Hanlan went for 41. James Karnik led the Eagles with 13 as Boston College shot 53.5 percent from the floor — and 7-for-15 from 3-point range.

Pittsburgh closed out the season with five straight losses after a win at North Carolina on Feb. 16. The Tar Heels have not lost since.

Capel confident he’ll remain at Pitt, 4:45 p.m.

Tuesday’s loss ended Pitt’s season at 11-21, the program’s sixth consecutive losing season and fourth in Jeff Capel’s four seasons at Panthers head coach.

But Capel, the Fayetteville native who played and coached for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, said he believes he’ll have the chance for a fifth season as Pitt’s head coach. That’s despite the fact Pitt athletics director Heather Lyke hasn’t given him any such assurances.

This is the third season in a row the Panthers have finished the regular season with six ACC wins. But Capel was adamant the program is in better shape now than when he arrived in spring 2018. The two seasons prior, with Kevin Stallings as its head coach, Pitt went 4-32 in ACC play including a winless league record in 2017-18.

“It was completely depleted when I got here,” said Capel, who was an assistant coach at Duke from 2011-18. “It was a mess. I didn’t know how bad it was. I don’t think the people inside the program knew how bad it was.”

While saying the program is “significantly better”, Capel admitted the on-court results — like posting a 21-67 record in ACC regular-season games during his tenure — isn’t good enough.

“Is it improved the way I thought it would be after four years? Absolutely not,” Capel said. “No one is more frustrated than me with that. I take responsibility for it.”

Grayson Allen tribute act? 3:08 p.m. The early game had some fireworks when Boston College’s Quentin Post became entangled with Odukale after a loose ball under the Pittsburgh basket. Post was not called for a foul -- the contact was ruled inadvertent, not a trip, both initially and on review -- but Odukale was called for a technical foul after turning to stand over Post and picked up a flagrant foul upon review.

“I’m not quite sure what happened,” Post said after the game. “I think there was a rebound. I honestly don’t fully recall, but I think he tackled me in a way. And then I was on the ground, and I think he kind of stood over me. I don’t know. I just had to keep calm, and the refs fixed it kind of for us, so it was good.”

Allen, famously, hip-checked Garrison Brooks during the 2018 UNC-Duke semifinal at Barclays, not his first flagrant foul for tripping.

First-round draft pick on display, wrong sport. 2:47 p.m. Pittsburgh quarterback — and potential future Carolina Panthers quarterback — Kenny Pickett had a prime seat behind the Panthers’ bench for their opener against Boston College.

Pickett, who played basketball at Ocean (N.J.) Township High, about an hour away without traffic, is a candidate for the Panthers’ sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft if they somehow talk themselves out of drafting an offensive lineman.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips walked over to shake Pickett’s hand as the QB headed for halftime refreshments with the Panthers down 11, 33-22.

Clemson (10) 70, N.C. State (15) 64

Seventh-seeded Virginia Tech will face 10th-seeded Clemson on Wednesday at 7 p.m. after the Tigers beat N.C. State in the opening round. The Wolfpack never led in the game.

“I’m the first to admit this was a tough year,” N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts said. “But if i’m going to go through a tough year, these are the guys I want to go through it with.”

Both teams shot poorly from beyond the arc. N.C. State knocked down 4 of 23 3-pointers (17.7%), while Clemson made 6 of 23 (26.1%).

N.C. State’s Dereon Seabron finished with a game-high 19 points. Clemson’s PJ Hall led the Tigers with 18.

As DeCock writes in this column, N.C. State’s 21st loss looked a lot like many of the other 20.

Louisville (11) 84, Georgia Tech (14) 74

Sixth-seeded Virginia will face 11th-seeded Louisville on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. after the Cardinals held on to beat the Yellow Jackets Tuesday night.

After leading for most of the first half and the entirety of the second half, Louisville was up 27 with 12:07 remaining in the game. But the Yellow Jackets responded with a 19-0 run, which cut the Cardinals’ lead to eight with 6:47 remaining. Georgia Tech would pull within five down the stretch.

Louisville guard Jarrod West finished with a game-high 20 points. Jordan Usher and Miles Kelly had 19 apiece for Georgia Tech. A year after winning the ACC tournament championship, the Yellow Jackets finished their season Tuesday with a 12-20 record.
