Ex-Russell Co. star Grier homers twice as Auburn loses 4-3 to Vanderbilt

Former Russell County star Anfernee Grier went 3-for-4 with two homers Saturday, but No. 12 Vanderbilt held on for a 4-3 win at Hawkins Field.

Grier’s first homer gave Auburn a 1-0 in the top of the third inning. Vanderbilt (41-15, 18-12) scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead.

Grier homered again to lead off the fifth inning and cut the lead to 3-2. The team traded runs in later innings.

Melvin Gray also had three hits for Auburn (23-33, 8-22 SEC).

Casey Mize (2-5) gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings and took the loss. Kyle Wright (8-3) gave up two runs on five hits over six innings and got the win.

The loss coupled with Tennessee’s win over Georgia means that Auburn and Arkansas will miss the SEC baseball tournament.
