Over a dozen Auburn players to miss practice this week due to COVID-19
Sixteen Auburn players will not be able to practice this week due to COVID-19, head coach Gus Malzahn said Sunday night.
Last Tuesday, the Tigers had “16 to 18” players out, which prompted Wednesday and Thursday’s practices to be canceled, as Auburn requires players who test positive to sit out for 17 days.
The Tigers tested “everyone” Thursday. Two position groups, which Malzahn did not identify, did not have enough players to practice.
“When you test positive you have to isolate for 10 days, then re-acclimate for 7 days,” an Auburn spokesperson said in a text message. “Then they are cleared.”
Auburn did not practice Friday due to the shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Malzahn made the decision to cancel Saturday’s practice to prepare for the week ahead.
“We’re adjusting as we go,” Malzahn said. “It’s been challenging, with the number of players out, and (we’re) just adjusting as we go.”
Malzahn hopes to practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, followed by a scrimmage Saturday. The entire team will again be tested for COVID-19 on Thursday.
Malzahn’s goal for this week?
“To practice,” he said.
