Auburn football: Cancer keeps former Tigers star Ed Dyas home from his College Football Hall of Fame enshrinement

Former teammates Ken Rice and John McGeever will attend in his place

MOBILE, Ala. — Cancer-stricken former Auburn star Ed Dyas will have to miss this weekend’s festivities at the College Football Hall of Fame.

Dyas was diagnosed with stomach cancer in August 2008, just over two months following the orthopedic surgeon’s retirement. The former fullback, linebacker and kicker was able to attend the induction ceremony in December, but recent tests indicate the cancer has returned.

Dyas has lost more than 100 pounds since starting treatment.

An Enshrinement Festival is being held this weekend in South Bend, Ind., for Dyas and the other 23 new members.

Former Auburn teammates Ken Rice and John McGeever will attend in Dyas’ place.

Dyas was a three-time Academic All-American who finished fourth in the 1960 Heisman Trophy voting as a senior.
