Auburn football: Best of the week

AUBURN, Ala. — Only a day away from Auburn's SEC opener versus Mississippi State, we can look back at the week that was.

As we'll done (and will continue to do) every Friday for the rest of the season, this links to the best quotes, stories and videos from Sunday through Thursday. It's obviously an abridged version of the immense number of items produced during the week, but this is supposed to be a short and breezy read, hitting on (what I consider) the highlights.

Enjoy.

BEST QUOTES

Defensive end LaDarius Owens, on the importance of getting a win Saturday to end the team's 10-game SEC losing streak and begin this year 1-0 in league play:

"It's very important. We haven't had one in a while and it was a good feeling leaving the stadium. A lot of fans walking up to me saying it feels good for them. We put them and ourselves through a lot of turmoil last year, a lot of trouble. We want to get a win for us as well as for our fans. They deserve it."

Gus Malzahn on the Tigers' use of various pictures to help illustrate their play calls on offense:

"Of course in the past, I've done a lot of numbers and colors and things like that. You've got to kind of evolve as you go, especially when you have assistants you coach against that used to coach with you and all that. So you've got to kind of keep that on the cutting edge. We played against Oregon and Chip Kelly in 2010 and I got a chance to last year. His signs were fancier than ours, so I tried to get a little competitive with that. Hopefully we're doing a better job."

BEST STORIES

Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson said his unit

needs to take out the "trash plays"

it has allowed in the first two games of the season.

Forget the fact Nick Marshall committed a turnover against Arkansas State, something he didn't do in the season opener. The coaching staff — Malzahn and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, specifically — didn't care, as they believed the junior signal-caller showed improvement from Week 1 to Week 2.
