AUBURN, Ala. — Jeff Whitaker didn't dress out for Saturday's game against Georgia. Sunday night, Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson revealed the senior lineman was battling an injury related to the nerves in his back.
That was about the extent of Johnson's knowledge of the situation, though.
"He's OK. I don't want to get into too much of the technicality of it," Johnson said. "He's got a nerve issue from his back or something and they're still doing some examination on it."
Whitaker had participated in every game of the season prior to Saturday, starting the first two contests (Arkansas and San Jose State) this fall. He's rarely registered on the stat sheet, however, making just five tackles (four solo, one assisted) this season.
This fall is Whitaker's fifth season on the Plains; he suffered a knee injury during the week leading up to last year's season opener versus Washington State. He ended taking a medical redshirt and sat out the entire 2013 campaign.
Whether he'll ever suit up for the Tigers again is up in the air, as Johnson had no idea how soon Whitaker's latest ailment would be resolved.
"I don't know his exact status," Johnson said.
