AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn is out of the top 10 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday night.
The Tigers fell to No. 14, a five-spot drop from last week. But the slight tumble gave Auburn a ray of hope: If it can win its final two regular season games, it will almost assuredly finish in the top 12 of the rankings. Ending among the top 12 teams in the final regular season rankings would guarantee the Tigers a spot in one of the "New Year's Six" bowls chosen by the playoff selection committee.
One of the teams Auburn will have to beat to get back in the top 12 is one of its remaining opponents: arch-rival Alabama. The Crimson Tide moved to the top of the rankings after knocking off former No. 1 Mississippi State on Saturday. Oregon and Florida State remained at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while Mississippi State moved down to No. 4.
Texas Christian (No. 5) and Ohio State (No. 6) were the first two out.
Before the Tigers can begin preparations for their Iron Bowl tussle with the Crimson Tide, they have one more home game to get through first. On Saturday, Auburn hosts Samford. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
