BATON ROUGE, La. -- An early lead wasn't enough for Auburn to topple LSU on Friday, as the Plainsmen fell on the road 3-2.
Auburn (20-14, 4-9 SEC) put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. But LSU rallied right back in the bottom of the first to tie the contest at 2-all. LSU (30-5, 9-4) moved ahead 3-2 thanks to a two-out RBI from Mark Laird. After that, the pitching staffs for both teams settled in, not allowing another run in the final six innings.
Phenix City Anfernee Grier had another solid outing at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. That increased his doubles total for the season to 16, which is tops in the SEC. Cole Lipscomb (4-1) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work.
Friday night's game was delayed more than two hours due to rain in the area.
