Auburn topples top-ranked LSU to even series

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Auburn excelled both offensively and defensively Saturday, handing top-ranked LSU a 6-1 loss.

On the mound, sophomore Keegan Thompson pitched a complete game -- his second consecutive outing that he's pitched every inning -- to improve to 7-2 this season.

At the plate, Phenix City native Anfernee Grier had three RBIs, a personal best. His double in the third inning --upping his SEC-leading total to 17 doubles this year -- put the Tigers out front 1-0. Auburn (21-14, 5-9 SEC) got its second run of the contest thanks to a triple from Grier, which brought home Melvin Gray.

LSU (30-6, 9-5) scored its only run of the contest in the eighth inning thanks to a solo home run from Andrew Stevenson.

Saturday's victory marked the first time Auburn has beat a team ranked No. 1 since it defeated Vanderbilt on May 13, 2007.

The final game of the series will start at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. SEC Network Plus will broadcast the contest.
