Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said the coaching staff is closer to naming a starting punter for the 2015 season. Freshman Ian Shannon and junior Kevin Phillips continue to battle for the spot throughout preseason camp but both received opportunities Saturday in live action during the scrimmage.
“They’re both capable of being very successful at this level,” Malzahn said. “That’s the good thing. They’re competing every day. We’re trying to put them in situations so they can feel that pressure. We let them punt when there is live up front and thought that was good. That is always the best ways to evaluate guys.”
Daniel Carlson confirmed last week he no longer has to worry about the double duty of punting and kicking at Auburn. The sophomore kicker is now focusing his duties to just field goal kicking and kickoffs.
