War Eagle Extra

COLUMN: Leaving land of B1G, MACtion for SEC territory an exciting opportunity

There’s no better place to be on Saturdays in the fall than SEC country.

It doesn’t matter if you are a fan in the stands, player on the sidelines or reporter in the press box.

I’m thrilled to get to join the latter group for the 2015 season.

My name is Michael Niziolek, and I’m the new Auburn football beat writer for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. I’ll be taking over the paper’s War Eagle Extra blog along with its Twitter, and Facebook accounts.

We are 11 days away from the Tigers’ season-opener at the Georgia Dome against Louisville, so before diving right into coverage I thought I’d offer a brief introduction.

I’m joining the Ledger-Enquirer staff as a Michigan State grad, who spent the last three years working as a sports reporter with MLive Media Group. The company owns eight papers in the state of Michigan.

My most recent role at the company was at the Ann Arbor News where I covered prep sports, and Eastern Michigan University football and basketball.

It was a busy year covering some of the top prep football talent in the state, going behind the scenes on a road trip with the EMU basketball team and covering a historic soccer match at the Big House between Manchester United and Real Madrid.

I enjoyed my time with the company, but when the opportunity to cover one of the top football college programs in the country, 365 days a year, presented itself; lets just say I started packing my bags.
