It was an eventful 24 hours for Auburn linebackers coach Lance Thompson.
Thompson went from celebrating a 31-10 win over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl to joining the team’s former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp in South Carolina.
Muschamp hired Thompson as the assistant head coach of the defense and defensive line coach.
“I’m excited to have Coach Thompson join our staff,” Muschamp said in a statement. “He did a great job calling the Auburn defense in their bowl win over Memphis. He has coached multiple positions throughout his career and has a great understanding of our defensive system. He will be an outstanding addition to our staff.”

The announcement came on the heels of Gus Malzahn naming Kevin Steele as Auburn’s new defensive coordinator Wednesday in his post-game press conference.
Thompson broke the news himself on his Twitter account at 4:15 p.m.
“A new day!!!! Celebrating at Billy’s in Newport Beach. #Go Gamecocks!” Thompson said.
When Muschamp left Auburn, his first hire was the Tigers’ secondary coach Travaris Robinson as the team’s defensive co-coordinator and defensive backs coach. Muschamp added Coleman Hutzler as the team’s linebackers coach.
Thompson drew rave reviews for his coaching effort Wednesday in the Birmingham Bowl.
The defense held one of the top offensive teams in the country to 205 yards and bottled up NFL-bound Paxton Lynch.
“Lance Thompson, Rodney Garner, Travis Williams and the defensive guys did a super job getting these guys ready to play,” Malzahn said.
