Alabama football: Memorial service set for Crimson Tide's Aaron Douglas; investigation of unexplained death continues
Plans for a memorial were set a day after the shocking death of an Alabama football player.
A service will be held Sunday evening in Knoxville, Tenn., near the hometown of Aaron Douglas who was found dead Thursday morning in Fernandina Beach, Fla. The 7 p.m. Sunday memorial will be at the Cokesbury Center and will be open to the public.
Back in Florida, the investigation into Douglas’ death continued.
Fernandina Beach police chief James T. Hurley said a report from the medical examiner was expected in “about 10 days.” He declined to comment further, but he told a local television station Thursday that his “preliminary guess” was alcohol or other drugs contributed to Douglas’ death.
Douglas, 21, was found dead on the balcony of a home the morning after attending a party by invitation of two unidentified Fernandina Beach women.
Before coming to Alabama, Douglas was a freshman All-American offensive lineman at Tennessee in 2009. He then transferred to Arizona Western College last season and was competing for a starting job with the Crimson Tide this spring.
Douglas’ former girlfriend Darbi Lou Todd of Florence was still in shock when talking about Douglas’ death Thursday.
“He was a great guy. He was really caring,” said Todd, daughter of former Alabama quarterback Richard Todd. “I was just blessed to be his friend. He cared about a lot of people. He had a lot of people who cared for him. He was a great guy.”
