ATHENS, Ga. — In the weeks leading up to his June 30 DUI arrest, then-Georgia athletic director Damon Evans exchanged more than 250 text messages with the woman who was in the car with him when he was stopped, according to cell phone records obtained Friday by the Athens Banner-Herald.

The University of Georgia made the phone records available for the bill spanning between June 7 and July 6, after releasing hundreds of pages of documents under an Open Records request earlier this week.

Among the 261 text messages to 28-year old Courtney Fuhrmann listed on the bill are four on July 1, the morning after the late-night arrest on an Atlanta street. A Georgia State Patrol trooper noted on his report that Evans had bloodshot eyes and had Fuhrmann’s panties in his lap.

Evans, who is married, also phoned Fuhrmann 11 times, including twice within an hour after he held a news conference in Athens on the evening of July 1 where he apologized.

Evans resigned days later.

Records obtained earlier this week showed that Evans met Fuhrmann more than five weeks before the night of the arrest, according to an e-mail that Fuhrmann sent Evans. They exchanged a total of 18 messages during that one-month period through early June.

In the July 1 news conference, Evans called Fuhrmann “just a friend,” but Fuhrmann told police that she had been seeing Evans “only a week or so,” according to the Georgia State Patrol arrest report.
