ATHENS — Georgia appears to be juggling its offensive line, although it was hoping to keep it a secret.
Freshman Kenarious Gates, who has yet to play, has been working with the first team at right guard this week. Clint Boling, who has started at left tackle, has been at right tackle, with Trinton Sturdivant at the left spot.
Josh Davis, who would be displaced as the starting right tackle, was mum on the moves.
“No comment,” he said, with a slight grin. “I can’t talk about that.”
Head coach Mark Richt, when asked about Gates with the first unit, also declined to elaborate.
“You noticed that?” Richt said. “Well then why don’t we tell Tennessee what we’re doing.”
Richt, who was smiling when he said that, had allowed the media to attend an extra five sessions and 25 minutes on Tuesday.
Georgia’s offensive line was supposed to be a strength this year, but it has struggled. The Bulldogs rank 10th in the league in rushing offense, and have allowed 12 sacks in five games.
“We haven’t played like we’d like to play,” offensive line coach Stacey Searels said Tuesday. “I want the five best guys to play together. A couple guys have played really well.”
@BR Body Subhed:Richt: ‘I’m coaching my tail off’
Richt was asked after Wednesday’s practice if he felt like he was coaching for his job.
“You always are. I think you always are,” he said, then took a long pause before adding: “I’m coaching my tail off though, I can tell you that.”
Richt was asked if the job security issue was fair, considering his success. He is 91-31 in 10 seasons at Georgia.
“Oh, I’m not getting into all that,” Richt said. “There are only so many things I can control, and that’s what I’m working on.”
@BR Body Subhed:Brown out, Durham questionable
Georgia’s receiving corps is growing more depleted, even after A.J. Green’s return from suspension.
Marlon Brown, who caught his first career touchdown at Colorado, will miss Saturday’s game with a shoulder injury. Richt said the injury shouldn’t be long term.
Kris Durham, who missed the Colorado game with a pinched nerve in his neck, has a 50-50 chance to play against Tennessee. Richt said Durham would probably be a game-time decision, as he was at Colorado.
@BR Body Subhed:Punt return duties
Logan Gray will “more than likely” return punts, with Branden Smith out with a concussion. Gray did so at Colorado despite having lingering issues with a sprained ankle, an injury he incurred in preseason.
“He still tweaks it about once a week, so I don’t know if he’s still full-speed,” Richt said.
Freshman Derek Owens is also getting reps at punt return, in addition to Green and Carlton Thomas.
