Former Georgia walkon Jack Loonam commissioned as an Army officer

ATHENS, Ga. -- Former Georgia walk-on tight end Jack Loonam was commissioned as an Army officer Friday at Sanford Stadium.

Loonam was a member of the team from 2011-14 and saw his only game action in last season's 55-9 rout over Charleston Southern. During his Georgia career, he juggled being in the Army ROTC on campus with the football team.

His father, Tim Loonam, a lieutenant colonel in the Army, was present for the ceremony. Although he was mostly a practice body, Loonam told the program's official website that he enjoyed his time with the football team.

"Coming in, I knew I wasn't going to be an Aaron (Murray) or a Todd (Gurley)," Loonam said. "I was OK with that. 'I'm here, and I'm going to gut this out and enjoy this,' " Loonam said. " 'This is going to be the best four years of my life, and how many people would love to be in my shoes?; I know countless buddies of mine that would love it."
