UGA notes: Georgia freshman WR Terry Godwin goes down with shoulder injury

ATHENS -- Georgia freshman receiver Terry Godwin is dealing with a shoulder injury.

A reporter spotted Godwin at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall with a sling on his shoulder. Teammate and fellow receiver Reggie Davis said others in the position group will have to pick up the slack now that Godwin is down for the time being.

"We have to pick up on reps on that too but it's only going to make us better," Davis said.

It's unknown the timetable Godwin would possibly be out for. A team representative said an update on Godwin's status was not expected to happen by Monday night.

Godwin is the second receiver to sustain an injury during preseason practice.

Sophomore Isaiah McKenzie pulled his hamstring late last week and will miss some practice time, though head coach Mark Richt said he isn't concerned that it's a long-term ailment.

Godwin came to Georgia as a five-star prospect out of Callaway High School. Godwin was running with the second team before the injury.

"Once I found out he was a baseball player I knew that he had good hand-eye coordination," Davis said. "He learns very well. I think he has a very good future ahead of him."

Bulldogs take a swim

With inclement weather once again rolling through, head coach Mark Richt decided to take his team to the Ramsey Student Center for swimming.

Each year the Bulldogs swim and jump off the high dive during preseason practice. Following Sunday's two-a-day practice, and with a couple of storms in the area, Richt decided to go ahead and take his team to the pool on the eighth day of practice.

It's a tradition that's well appreciated by the team.

"It's great to lift the spirits a little bit," running back Keith Marshall said. "Everyone's out here grinding. It's good to get a day off mentally and physically.

Only the newcomers -- freshmen and transfers -- were expected to dive, though others can if they want. A few players had to wear life jackets to jump and were then escorted by their teammates after hitting the water.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt once again joined in on the fun and did his trademark flip off the high dive. Basketball coach Mark Fox made an appearance and jumped at the request of the football team.

"It's huge during camp," kicker Marshall Morgan said. "Of course we love practice and love doing our craft. But especially the linemen, not as much kickers, need days of rest to kind of recover."

However, the Bulldogs won't have too much time to rest. Since Georgia was unable to practice Monday, the Bulldogs will hit the field with another two-a-day session Tuesday.

"We had a little bit of a warning that there might be some weather coming in and instead of sitting around waiting all day to practice, we decided to come on and do it," Richt said in a statement released by the program. "Also, It was a perfect time, it was practice eight or nine in a string of practices without a day off. (Monday) we got a day off and, we'll have four more practices before school starts."
