The Georgia freshman was arrested two times previously while on the Bulldogs roster, which according to team policy was grounds for dismissal.
The school confirmed Friday that he would be dismissed.
“It’s extremely disappointing,” said Georgia coach Kirby Smart in a release. “He’s been given previous opportunities to remain on our football team but continues to exhibit a lack of good judgment and commitment to the standards we require and expect from our players. He’s put himself in a difficult position but we hope he finds a path that will provide some direction in his future.”
Rivers’ first arrest was in November 2015 with freshman linebacker Natrez Patrick, where the two were booked by Athens-Clarke County Police for marijuana possession on campus. He was arrested again in December 2015 on misdemeanor marijuana charges.
His second violation of Georgia's marijuana policy would have resulted in a four-game suspension.
In 2015, Rivers appeared in four games and totaled four tackles.
