Region 1-4A boys, girls basketball tournaments’ opening rounds set

After a long regular season, four boys and girls basketball teams will kick off the Region 1-4A tournament Monday.

The first two games in the boys and girls brackets have been finalized after Friday night’s action. On the boys side, No. 5 seed Columbus will host No. 8 Cairo at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Meanwhile, No. 6 seed Shaw will host No. 7 Hardaway at the same date and time.

The No. 5 Columbus girls will host No. 8 Northside at 6 p.m. Monday, while No. 6 Cairo will battle No. 7 Hardaway at Shaw High School at the same time.

On the boys side, No. 3 seed Carver and No. 4 seed Northside have byes leading up to Tuesday’s quarterfinals. Westover and Americus-Sumter have byes until the semifinals, though their seeding has yet to be determined. The top two teams play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night to determine the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.

Americus-Sumter and Shaw girls have first round byes, though their seeding at No. 3 and No. 4 is not finalized due to Americus-Sumter’s game against Westover. No. 1 Carver and No. 2 Westover, meanwhile, officially have byes until the semifinals.
