Carver High School hires new football coach
Muscogee County Schools director of athletics Jeff Battles confirmed Thursday that Dougherty head football coach Corey Joyner will be the new head coach at Carver.
Joyner comes to Carver after a six-year stint at Dougherty, during which time he compiled a 10-48 overall record at his alma mater. The Trojans made the Class 3A playoffs the last two seasons under Joyner, marking the program’s first ever consecutive playoff appearances.
Dougherty resigned from his position at Dougherty on Monday.
Joyner was originally hired as an assistant at Dougherty in 2007 during former Shaw head coach Charles Flowers’ time as head coach. Over the next few years, Joyner served in a few different capacities for the team, including offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator.
Joyner takes over a Carver program that has struggled to establish consistency over the past few years.
Prior to Joyner’s hiring, three men have been Carver head coach since Joe Kegler’s ouster following the 2015 season. Carver has gone 10-13 in the past two years, including a 3-8 effort in 2017 that was Calvin Arnold’s only season as head coach.
Neither Joyner nor Carver High School principal Chris Lindsey could be reached for comment.
