What $12M Harris County indoor practice facility will look like — and project details
The Harris County School District has released renderings of what its multisport indoor practice facility will look like and updated details about the $12 million project.
A ceremony is scheduled for June 23 at 5 p.m., when officials will break ground to start construction of the 40,000-square-foot facility behind Harris County High School.
The project is expected to be completed in June 2023 and comprise:
- Four locker rooms
- Weight room
- 60-yard indoor turf practice field
- Additional parking at the sports complex.
Justin Finney, HCSD assistant superintendent for business services and technology, explained the rationale for the project.
“Our athletic facilities were created for a 2A school, but we are a 5A school, and the pace of growth in our community continues to accelerate quickly,” he said in the news release. “This project will alleviate pressure on the physical education classes that affect all students. Additionally, it will level us up to quite a few of the school districts around us that offer their student athletes these types of facilities.”
Southern A&E of Austell is the architect, and J&R Construction and Development of Carrollton is the general contractor.
Funding for the project comes from a general obligation bond and the 1% Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax — both approved by Harris County voters in 2019 — as well as savings on construction of the new Harris County Carver Middle School, a $33 million project that finished approximately $2.5 million under budget.
