Phenix City drop golf fees in wake of green problems

The Phenix City Council approved a change in green fees and cart rentals at Lakewood Golf Course Tuesday, hoping to boost use of the municipal course in the wake of problem greens.

City Manager Bubba Roberts asked the council to approve cost adjustment to $21 with cart from Monday through Friday at the course and $28 on weekends and holidays. He said the cost for concessions are under study.

The city made the moves to offset a loss in business due to problems with the dying grass on the greens. The city will have to replace the greens in the future, but chose to make changes in the fee structure to offset losses in use.

"We have been losing play and in order to maintain the play that we have now, I asked that you approve these adjustments," Roberts told the council.

The new fees were passed unanimously and will be effective on April 21.
