County begins bid process for animal shelter

The Russell County Commission will begin the advertising of bids for the construction of a new city-county animal shelter. The county will advertise the solicitation of bid for the project in three regional newspapers, with the bid opening at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in the Russell County Courthouse on 14th Street.

The city and county agreed to jointly construct an animal shelter on Prentiss Drive to replace the city-owned shelter on 12th Street. The county had planned to build its own facility in Seale after the city had decided in 2005 it could no longer house county animals in its facility. The county spent two years studying the issue but found the cost of construction more than it could afford.

County Engineer Larry Kite said that while the animal shelter will be shared jointly by the city and county, the county will handle the bidding process. The site, near the Russell County Jail and the Emergency Management Agency on county-owned property, has already been surveyed.
