WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers joined Tuskegee Airmen veterans and fellow lawmakers at a ceremony Wednesday in the Capitol Rotunda recognizing the 60th Anniversary of the beginning of the integration of the Armed Forces.

The ceremony today followed last week’s House passage of Rogers’ resolution honoring the occasion, H. Con. Res 297. The resolution was authored by Rogers and U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek, D-Fla., and had 38 co-sponsors including the entire Alabama Delegation.

“The beginning of the integration of our armed services did not solve overnight the injustices faced by so many African Americans, but it did help the process of healing so many wrongs here at home,” Rogers said. “I am honored Congress held this ceremony today to help further honor the contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, and the many other courageous African American soldiers who have fought bravely for our country.”

Meek added, “From the Revolutionary War to the present wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, African Americans and other minorities in uniform have excelled in service to our country. Thanks to President Truman’s leadership, the U.S. Armed Forces is a pioneer in providing equal opportunity for all its uniformed members, and the military remains the truest melting pot in our society.”

Rogers said 45 Tuskegee Airmen were expected to be in attendance for the ceremony. In July, Rogers asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to help acknowledge their contributions at the ceremony today.

Rogers, who represents Alabama's 3rd Congressional District which includes Russell and Lee counties, is a member of the Armed Services Committee.
