MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Central-Phenix City trailed 5-4 in the sixth inning Monday at Patterson Field, but Jarrod Turnage walked, Will Boan was hit by a pitch and Tyler Andujar came through with a two-run triple to give the Red Devils the lead for good on their way to a 10-6 victory over Jeff Davis.

Chase Day earned the season-opening win in relief as he worked the Red Devils out of a jam in the fifth. Jake Clark pitched the first four innings for Central.

Monday in Montgomery, Ala.

Smiths squanders two to start season

HOOVER, Ala. — Smiths Station took early leads in both games to open the season Monday, but they failed to hang on.

In their 9-8 loss against Clay-Chalkville, the Panthers led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but they allowed four runs as they made three of their six errors in the inning.

The Panthers lost their second game 7-5 to the day’s host, Spain Park, after leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Defensive baseball clinic at Shaw

Former Oakland A’s infielder Ted Kubiak will hold a defensive clinic 8 p.m. Thursday at Shaw High.

The cost is $10 per person or $100 per team.

Shaw will also raffle off three Akadema gloves at $5 a ticket. For more information, call Shaw coach Mike Getkin at 706-593-9993.

Kubiak, who is now a roving defensive instructor in the Cleveland Indians organization, spent 10 years in the major leagues with several teams.
