Marion County High football player dies after collapsing at practice Tuesday

A Marion County High football player was pronounced dead shortly after collapsing at practice on Tuesday evening.

Senior lineman Erick Gutierrez was taken to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Hospital in Americus, Ga., after coaches performed CPR, according to Marion County principal Glenn Tidwell. The cause of death would be determined by an autopsy, Tidwell said.

“We don't really have any answers,” Tidwell said Wednesday. “We're just going to have to wait for some.”

The Marion County football team has moved its game against Schley County from Friday to 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Gutierrez played for Marion County all four years and would be missed by teammates and classmates, Tidwell said.

“He was just a great kid,” Tidwell said. “Everybody loved him. He was always an easy-going and well-mannered kid.”
