The Georgia High School Association has announced it has postponed portions of the state swim meet and all state wrestling sectionals until next week due to the possibility of snow and icy roads on Friday.
Nearly two dozen area swimmers had qualified for the swimming portion of the GHSA Swimming and Diving State Championship at Marist School in Atlanta, and each will have to wait through the weekend before competing for titles. The swim portion of the event for GHSA Classes A-AAAA, which covers all area schools, has been pushed back from Friday and Saturday to Monday and Tuesday. Columbus freshman Will Hutwagner is set to compete in the diving portion of the event, which is taking place today, and the Class AAAAA preliminaries will still take place this evening and continue through the finals on Monday.
Wrestling sectionals were set to begin for all GHSA classifications on Friday and run through Saturday but have been pushed back to Monday and Tuesday.
The GHSA has stated that individual schools may decide if they would like to reschedule regular-season basketball games. Muscogee County School District system-wide athletic directory Gary Gibson said a decision will be made on whether or not to play the games in the morning when the weather can be better assessed. If the regular-season games are rescheduled, it could lead to rescheduling of region tournaments, which are slated to begin on Monday.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association has not yet released any plans to change the state wrestling tournament, which began today, or Friday's boys basketball sub-region games.
The Harris County girls basketball team was scheduled to play a Region 1-AAAA tournament play-in game at Americus-Sumter on Friday. That game has been pushed back to Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Glenwood girls basketball game against Kingwood on Friday in the AISA Class AAA state tournament has been postponed to Feb. 16.
