JT Phillips' pitching, homers by Pierce Ressmeyer, Kyle Carter, highlight Columbus High's win vs. Marist on Military Appreciation Night

Top-ranked Columbus High got a strong pitching performance by JT Phillips while senior catcher Pierce Ressmeyer and center fielder Kyle Carter hit towering home runs as the Blue Devils defeated Marist 8-2 Friday night. The game took place at Ragsdale Field on the campus of Columbus State University and was part of Military Appreciation Night.

Phillips (6-0), a University of Georgia signee, pitched five innings allowing just one unearned run. He scattered three hits while striking out four batters on his way to his sixth victory of the season.

Columbus High got on the board in the second inning as Hunter Swilling and Josh Lester started the frame with back-to-back singles. After Ryan Lang was hit by a pitch to load the bases, sophomore Will Kilgore laced a single to centerfield scoring two.

Spencer Draws capped off the scoring in the inning with a RBI double.

Ressmeyer hit a line drive home run over the leftfield wall in the third before Carter launched a two-run blast over the rightfield wall an inning later.

After Carter's blast, Phillips singled followed by a Ressmeyer double. Anthony Padron drove in pinch-runner A.D. Young from third on a groundout to first.

Carter drove in the Blue Devil's final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Pinch-hitter Robin Gavin started the inning off with a curling double down the leftfield line.

Marist scored two unearned runs in the game including one in the top of the fourth.

With runners on first and third, the Blue Devils got Griffin Davis in a run down between first and second base. The runner on third, Devin Kalil, would then sprint for home before getting in a run-down himself. Kalil looked to be an easy out at the plate, but Phillips dropped the ball allowing Marist to score their first run of the game.

Marist added a run in the seventh off of reliever Hunter Swilling after a throwing error advanced a runner to third. Griffin Davis would then proceed to drive the runner on a single.

Columbus High will play their final regular season game this afternoon against Parkview beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Randy Jordan Field.
