Gem of the class
Tri-Cities (Ga.) High offensive lineman Shamire DeVine is probably the top recruit for the Yellow Jackets. The giant offensive lineman can be a dominating force in the Jackets' run-heavy offense. The other premiere guy would be Lovejoy running back Travis Custis. Custis rushed for 2,000 yards and led Lovejoy to the state title game for the second straight season. Paul Johnson called him the best running back in Georgia.
The Yellow Jackets did get a surprise on Signing Day with the signing of Sandy Creek's Corey Griffin, who had been committed to UAB. But for the second straight year, the surprises were negative. Tech hemorrhaged commits down the stretch, losing DeVine's teammate Jeremi Hall to South Florida and Custis' teammate Jumichael Ramos to N.C. State. The Jackets also lost quarterback Damon Mitchell to Arkansas and defensive back Tolando Cleveland to Mississippi State. Georgia Tech is still waiting to hear from Nashville, Tenn. athlete Cornelius Elder, who also wants to play basketball. Elder will choose between Tech, UCLA, Ohio State, Auburn and Tennessee.
