Brookstone's Isabel McCluskey signed a softball scholarship to the College of Charleston, fulfilling a dream and beginning to close a chapter on one of the most familiar surnames in Brookstone's history.
One of four remaining McCluskey's at the school, including her three cousins, she will join a long list of college signees in her family. Her brother, Drew, signed with the Citadel football team in 2012, which, not coincidentally, is a short five-minute drive down the road in Charleston, S.C.
"It's one of the main reasons I wanted to go there," McCluskey said. "He's only five minutes away. I don't know anyone there, which is fine, but it'll be nice to have someone -- especially family."
She said she is proud to continue on the legacy of her family at Brookstone.
"It's an honor and a privilege," she said. "Me and my three cousins -- we're kind of the last in the 'McCluskey era,' as people call it. I couldn't be prouder to represent my family."
To do that, it took a lot of time, a lot of softball camps and travel ball tournaments and plenty of hours in the batting cage.
She said she received "four or five" offers, but that Charleston was the only place she wanted to go.
"It's been my dream school for awhile," she said.
She hit .548 with four home runs and 17 RBIs this season en route to a berth in the Class A-private final tournament at South Commons.
