The winner of the Ledger-Enquirer High School Boys Athlete of the Week poll is . . .
Nicholas Nugent is the Ledger-Enquirer High School Boys Athlete of the Week, based on our online poll.
Nugent is a senior on the wrestling team at St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School. In the 132-pound weight class, he notched his 100th career victory during the Coahulla Creek Invitational in Dalton.
“It’s an amazing accomplishment considering how tough our schedule is,” Pacelli wrestling coach Adrian Anderson told the Ledger-Enquirer in an email. “Nicholas has worked hard through every season at Pacelli and achieved this milestone with exceptional grace and class.”
Nugent’s oldest brother, Noah, set the school record for career wrestling victories at 135 before he graduated in 2020.
We invited the athletics director at each public and private high school in Muscogee County, Harris County, Chattahoochee County, Phenix City, Russell County and Smiths Station to nominate a male athlete for this poll.
Among this week’s three nominees, Nugent received 52% of the 28,143 votes from our readers. Voting started Monday and ended at noon Friday. The poll has no limit on the number of times a person can vote. Here are the complete final results:
