The Ledger-Enquirer High School Boys Athlete of the Week poll winner is . . .
Dustin Sherman is the Ledger-Enquirer High School Boys Athlete of the Week, based on our online poll.
As a senior quarterback, tight end and defensive back on the St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School football team, Dustin led the Vikings to a 41-12 win Sept. 5 at Stone Mountain. He passed for 195 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.
Dustin was chosen to wear the No. 7 John Henderson Honor Jersey this season, a tribute to 2002 St. Anne-Pacelli graduate John Henderson, who made the ultimate sacrifice when he was killed in 2005 in Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.
Pacelli head football coach told the Ledger-Enquirer in an email, “Dustin embodies the heart, character, and warrior spirit that John Henderson, Jr. stood for. He leads not with words, but with actions. He shows up every day, putting his teammates first, and representing everything that number stands for.”
We invited the athletics director at each public and private high school in Muscogee County, Harris County, Chattahoochee County, Phenix City, Russell County and Smiths Station to nominate a male student for this poll.
Among this week’s five nominees, Dustin received 67% of the 13,242 votes from our readers. Voting started Monday and ended at noon Friday. The poll has no limit on the number of times a person can vote. Here are the complete final results:
