The Ledger-Enquirer High School Girls Athlete of the Week poll winner is . . .
Sophia Chervenak is the Ledger-Enquirer High School Girls Athlete of the Week, based on our online poll.
As a senior on the St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School wrestling team, Sophia won the 132-pound weight class in the Coach Nichols Memorial Tournament at Russell County High School on Jan. 10 by pinning all her opponents, including one of the top-ranked girls in Alabama.
Sophia had a 24-2 record this season as of her nomination last week, including a top-three finish in every tournament the past three years. She has won three state championships as well as other tournament titles.
And she is one of Pacelli Wrestling’s Black Shirts, an honor given to wrestlers who show the best of the school’s values, dominating mat performance, toughness and leadership.
We invited the athletics director at each public and private high school in Muscogee County, Harris County, Chattahoochee County, Phenix City, Russell County and Smiths Station to nominate a female athlete for this poll.
Among this week’s two nominees, Sophia received 54% of the 20,387 votes from our readers. Voting started Monday and ended at noon Friday. The poll has no limit on the number of times a person can vote. Here are the complete final results:
