Brookstone falls in overtime to No. 1 Mount Pisgah

Brookstone pushed No. 1 Mount Pisgah into overtime Friday night before falling 27-21.

The Cougars, who beat Mount Pisgah to open the 2014 season, held the lead Friday on three occasions, but the state's top-ranked Class A rallied each time.

Sam Ndem gave the Cougars the first lead on a 37-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Brookstone's kickoff went out of bounds, forcing a rekick. Mount Pisgah's Kai Williams returned the rekick 73 yards, but the PAT was missed, leaving Brookstone ahead 7-6.

On the next offensive play, Brookstone threw an interception, but Mount Pisgah missed a field goal.

The Cougars then went on an 18-play, 80-yard drive that took up almost nine minutes. Prather Hudson capped the drive with the first of his two TD runs, this one from 2 yards out. Matt Taich added the PAT for a 14-6 lead with 28 seconds left in the first half.

Brookstone tried to squib kick on the kickoff, but Mount Pisgah recovered at its 45-yard line. Mount Pisgah quarterback Jacob Cendoya hit Michael Provost with a 35-yard pass. Mount Pisgah made the two-point conversion to tie the score at 14-14 at halftime.

The Brookstone defense recovered two fumbles in the third quarter. After the second one, the Cougars drove 65 yards in 10 plays with Hudson scoring from 3 yards out. Taich's kick have Brookstone a 21-14 lead.

Mount Pisgah tied the game in the fourth quarter. forcing overtime.

Brookstone got the ball first, starting at the 15. But on a fourth-and-2, a pass fell incomplete. Mount Pisgah's J.R. Cendoya scored two plays later for the win.

Ndem led Brookstone with 67 yards on 10 carries, while Kordell Braaxton had 63 on three carries.

Brookstone's Scott Pethtel, who took over the program after Brad Dehem left earlier this year, said he saw a lot of good things from his team.

"We played hard," he said. "But we shot ourselves in the foot too often. We made mistakes that we just can't have happen and expect to win. We were our own worst enemies.

"If we can prevent some of the mistakes we made, we'll be OK."

The Cougars have a week off before hosting Columbus on Sept. 4.
