Glenwood scores early, often in rout of Sherwood
Glenwood scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and kept up the onslaught as it shut out visiting Sherwood Christian Academy by a whopping 68-0 score Friday night in the Gators' 2015 opener at Sammy Howard Field.
Quan Holt got things going as he scored on the Gators' first and third plays from scrimmage to set the tone for Glenwood, which avenged last year's loss to the Eagles and also stopped a six-game losing streak from 2014.
"It has been a long time since those players felt this way. They had fun playing and had smiles on their faces," said Glenwood coach Tripp Henderson after the game. "I liked their intensity and was proud of the way the whole roster stayed on task.
"I'll look at the film tomorrow and see what we need to work on but this weekend, I told them to enjoy the feeling," he added.
After the first quarter, the Gators widened the lead to 41-0 at the half and because of the score, the teams agreed to a running clock for the second half. Still the Gators backups scored 27 points for the final score.
It could have been worse as the Gators had four touchdowns called back due to penalties, three by Brandon Mosley, who thought he had three TDs on a punt return, interception return and running play all wiped out by penalties. Moseley did have a 49-yard kickoff that set up Holt's second TD. Quan Holt also had a third TD called back due to a penalty.
Gator newcomer Latavious Calhoun was the leading rusher in the game as he ran for 126 yards on only six carries and scored two touchdowns, all in the first half. Backup quarterback Stephen Blocker had the longest TD from scrimmage with a 56 yard run.
While the offense romped, the defense also did its share of damage and scored four touchdowns while limiting the Eagles to negative offensive yards for the game. Quarterback Dillon Evans, who threw for three touchdowns against Glenwood last year, had only one completion for the game for 13 yards in seven pass attempts and an interception. The defense wound up with four pickoffs in the game.
