Santiago, defense lead Calvary to 28-26 win over Thomas Jefferson Academy
LOUISVILLE, Ga. -- Anthony Santiago ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns Friday night and Calvary broke up a late 2-point try to defeat Thomas Jefferson Academy 28-26.
The back-and-forth matchup began with Santiago scoring on a 3-yard run with 5:38 remaining in the first quarter. The conversion by Thomas Chappel made it 7-0.
But Thomas Jefferson scored the next two touchdowns on runs by Josh Hopper and Zack Douglas to put the Jags up 14-7.
Calvary quarterback Kasen Andrews hit Daniel Stricklin with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left in the second quarter and the game was tied 14-14 at the half.
Santiago broke free on a 64-yard touchdown run with 5:52 left in the third quarter to give the Knights a 21-14 lead. Thomas Jefferson's Dakota Lamb score on a 7-yard run with 44 second left in the third quarter, but the kick failed and Calvary led 21-20.
Jacquez Green carried the ball five times for 32 yards before leaving the game after he rolled his ankle making a tackle on defense. Tred Wilburn came in to replace him.
With the Jags keying on Santiago, Wilburn made a key play mid way through the fourth quarter. He took the handoff and went 39 yards to Jags' 3-yard line. From there, Cody Russell finished off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Chappel added the extra point and the Knights were up 28-26.
Hopper scored for Thomas Jefferson with 3:43 left to make it 28-26.
Going for two points to tie the game, the Jags tried to run an option. Bryce Andrews forced a fumble that was recovered by Crawford Ledbetter.
The Knights recovered the ensuing onside kick and converted on a fourth down and two to keep the ball. They took a knee on the next two plays for the win.
Calvary rushed 32 times for 261 yards. Wilburn had five carries for 51 yards.
Kasen Andrews was 5-of-10 for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Calvary coach Brian Osborne said he thought Santiago would be OK.
"It's good that we have an off-week next, and I think he'll be good to come back to play."
