Daniel, Owensby lead Central-Carrollton to 48-7 win over Hardaway

Special to the Ledger-Enquirer

CARROLLTON -- Lamar Daniel and Damarious Owensby made Roy Richards Memorial Stadium their personal playground on Friday evening.

The Central High School senior sensations shined in all three phases of the game and spearheaded a 48-7 hammering of Hardaway in the Week 3 showcase.

Along with making several knee-buckling tackles on defense, Daniel hauled in a 67-yard touchdown pass and also blocked a punt and picked it up for the scoop and score touchdown -- all of which was part of a 41-7 opening-half annihilation.

Not to be outdone, Owensby also had a dandy of a day, dancing around Golden Hawk defenders to the tune of 232 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries to headline a Central rushing attack that gobbled up 274 yards on the ground in the opening 24 minutes.

And then there was the Central defense, which would have held the Golden Hawks (1-3) to negative yardage through one half of play had it not been for an 80-yard touchdown strike from Hardaway quarterback Dominique Ford to Jakhari Thomas in what proved to be the lone miscue defensively. The Golden Hawks finished with a net of 49 yards and just one first down in the first half.

The No. 6 Lions (3-0) scored on all five of their first-half possessions and added the special teams touchdown for good measure.

Owensby had touchdown runs of seven and 49 yards, while Joe Simpkins added a seven-yard touchdown run, which was followed by Jaleel Terry's 67-yard strike to Daniels and then Daniels found the end zone again on the blocked punt for the score to make it a 27-0 contest less than four minutes into the second quarter.

After Hardaway hit its big scoring play, the Lions answered with a one-yard Byron Brown touchdown run and capped off the first half with an amazing, 49-yard touchdown run by Owensby that saw him break tackles left and right en route to the end zone.

The Central starters played the opening possession of the second half, resulting in a 71-yard scoring drive capped by Simpkins' second touchdown of the game, an 11-yard run with 8:30 remaining in the third.

From there, the younger players got reps as the running clock made for a quick second half.
