Columbus, Northside earn berths in state volleyball tournament
Columbus and Northside both earned berths in the Class AAAAA state tournament by advancing to the Area 1 semifinals on Tuesday night.
Top seed Columbus beat LaGrange 2-0 (25-5, 25-9) in its only match on Tuesday. Shardonee Hayes led Columbus with six kills, three aces, two blocks and a dig.
Northside, the second seed, won two matches 2-0 over Hardaway (25-8, 25-8) and 2-0 over Harris County (25-21, 25-20). Kaitlyn Ellis had 17 digs, seven aces and two assists for Northside.
Columbus and Northside face off at 5 p.m. Thursday for a spot in the finals.
Harris County and Carver will also play at 5 p.m.
The winner of that match will also clinch a berth in the state tournament.Tuesday at Northside

IN 2-AAA TOURNEY
ROCKMART, Ga. -- Destiny Murph had 17 service points and 17 assists to lead Kendrick to over Spencer and Cedartown in the Area 2-AAA tournament.
Cudrea Veasley had 15 kills, four blocks and 10 service points in the victories.

NORTHSIDE, BROOKSTONE WIN
Northside swept the boys and girls titles in Race A at Kinnett Stadium on Tuesday.
In the boys race, Northside finished with 16 points with Jordan second at 76. In the girls race, Northside won with 41 points, while Columbus had 70.
Northside's Austin Kidd won the boys race with a time of 16 minutes 46.80 seconds. He beat teammate Noah Churchwell, who finished in 18:05.25.
Central-Macon's Kyla Odom won the girls event in a time of 21:59.54. Shaw's Marissa Gonzalez was second at 22:23.92.
In Race B, Brookstone won both. The Cougars finished with 26 points, while Kendrick had 46. In the girls race, Brookstone had 19 points to Hardaway's 40.
Brookstone's William Jenkins won the boys race in 17:52.35. Austin Chester of Hardaway was second in 18:53.75.
Gigi Yancey of Brookstone won the girls event in 23:02.52, beating teammate Abbie Dillon (23:07.67).

HARDAWAY 13, SHAW 1
Josie Arwood pitched a four-inning complete-game as Hardaway beat Shaw 13-1 on Monday.
She gave up two hits and struck out five.
Lilly Mitchell, Summer Stanford and Alex Foster drove in runs for the Lady Hawks.
Hardaway is the No. 5 seed for the Region 1-AAAAA tournament. The Lady Hawks play No. 4 seed LaGrange today at 4 p.m.
