High school roundup: Harris County splits with Ola; Kendrick volleyball team wins

HAMILTON, Ga. -- Brooke Wakenigg drove in Lilly Hooper with the winning run as Harris County beat Ola 6-5 on Wednesday in Game 1 of their Class AAAAA state tournament series.

Ole came back to force a Game 3 with a 1-0 victory in eight innings in the second game.

Ole hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning of Game 1 to take a 5-3 lead.

Hannah Carroll hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Hooper hit a double in the bottom of the seventh, setting the stage for Wakenigg's game-winning hit.

Game 3 of the first-round series is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.Wednesday at Harris County

UNION GROVE 12-1, COLUMBUS 0-0

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- Union Grove eliminated Columbus from the Class AAAAA state tournament with a pair of shutouts, 12-0 and 1-0, on Wednesday.

Columbus, which finished the season 18-15, made eight errors in the first game. Only one of the 12 runs Kaleigh Sullivan allowed were earned.

Columbus managed just nine hits in the two games combined. Nicole Humphries had four of those, two in each game.Wednesday at Union Grove

BROOKSTONE SEEDED NO. 1

The final power rankings for Class A softball were released Wednesday, and Brookstone will head into the private-school tournament as the No. 1 seed.

The Lady Cougars were third in the final rankings, but the top two teams -- Tattnall Square and First Presbyterian -- did not win their region titles. GHSA rules place region winners at the top of the final rankings. Brookstone won Region 4.

The Lady Cougars will host Landmark Christian, the No. 16 seed, for a best-of-three series starting on Oct. 21. The winner of that series will advance to the Elite Eight at South Commons.

KENDRICK 3, se bULLOCH 1

BROOKLET, Ga. -- Cudrea Veaslsey had 17 kills and Brittany Thompson had 19 service points Wednesday to lead Kendrick to a win over Southeast Bulloch in the Class AAA state tournament.

Kendrick (18-2) defeated Southeast Bulloch 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19) to advance and play Sonoraville Tuesday at Calhoun, Ga. Sonoraville defeated Washington County 3-0 on Wednesday.

Orienya Babatua had four blocks and 16 assists and Destiny Murph had 22 assists.

Jabreia Burston had 10 service points and 15 kills in the win for the Lady Cherokees.Wednesday at Brooklet, Ga.
