Burnett passes Bessemer past Glenwood

Bessemer Academy's Logan Burnett passed for 233 yards in the first half and led the No. 2 ranked Rebels to a 47-14 conquest of Glenwood Friday night in an AISA Class 3A Region 2 game at Sammy Howard field.

Burnett completed 16-of-21 passes as Bessemer had over 400 yards in the first half alone, as the Rebels improved to 8-0 on the year and 4-0 in the region. Bessemer's last two games are against non-region foes, so it will enter the state playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Glenwood also has two non-region foes in their last two games and will be the No. 4 seed with a 1-3 region record and 3-4 overall.

The passing attack started early as Burnett found Marcus Moody open on a 45-yard touchdown on the Rebels second play from scrimmage and a 7-0 lead. On Glenwood's first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Brodie Medders intercepted a Carrington Huddleston pass and set up a second Bessemer score.

Six plays later, Rashad Moseley broke open and raced to the end zone for a 28-yard TD. Moseley finished the night with four rushes for 132 yards and a TD. He also caught four passes for an additional 50 yards.

The Gators climbed to 14-7 when Christian Clausell grabbed a Huddleston pass and raced 44 yards to the one where Mario Richmond bulled in for the Gators only first half score. But with Burnett leading the Rebels down the field on his passing, Bessemer scored 20 unanswered points in the second period to put the game away.

Moody got Bessemer on the scoreboard in the third when he intercepted a pass and ran it in from 30 yards out. Huddleston negated that score when he hit Clausell in the third for a 35-yard touchdown pass. Clausell, the leading receiver for the Gators, had two receptions for 79 yards and a score.

With a running clock in the 4th period, Thomar Simmons scored on an 18-yard run, his third TD of the night for Bessemer.
